Gratitude is a funny thing. It’s something I have been feeling a lot of lately, but ironically it’s been a difficult thing to articulate for some reason…maybe because it’s a feeling?… I don’t know. At any rate, I am so grateful for so many reasons…even though I most certainly am not, and my life is not – well…”perfect”.
I’ve heard sayings before like ‘let people be inspired by how you deal with your imperfections, you don’t need to be perfect.’ Ha!! Who is?!? What is perfection anyway?… Food for thought, right?… I digress…
But back to gratitude. Seriously. I am so grateful. For so many reasons. Every. Single. Day.
Gratitude is a practice. Just like anything else I suppose. But this to me is a REALLY good and worth while practice! Like turn-your-life-around kinda practice! The practice of being grateful for what what we do have turns what we have into enough.
Now I can tell you that this hasn’t always been my practice. Or my lifestyle. But I would like it to be moving forward, as I have seen the positive impact it has had in my world. Especially when I am good about consistently looking at the glass half full instead of empty every day!
Most certainly when we are going through the rough patches of life…which could come at any moment, right?! That makes being grateful that much MORE difficult, but that much MORE necessary during those tough times!
According to the Dictionary, Gratitude is the quality or feeling of being grateful or thankful. In other words, count your blessings more than your burdens.
I had the privilege this past weekend of spending some quality time with family and friends in one of my favorite cities – Santa Barbara, CA. It is such a special place, and one that I hold near and dear to my heart. Some of my favorite people on the planet live there…you know who you are…and I am so grateful for each and every one of you. Thank you for making my spirit sing and for showing me unconditional love and total joy.
As I spent time filling up my “love tank” I really took inventory of all the beautiful things that I have to be grateful for in this life. And when I say “things”, I don’t even necessarily mean things at all! Some of the best things in life are not material. At all. Far from it in fact.
For anyone that knows me personally they know this about me, but if not, I am very big on presence. Be present. Be here now. If there is one thing that drives me bonkers it is everyone on their phones ALL THE TIME.
I like to say it’s better to give someone a piece of your heart than a piece of your mind. Think about that. It’s just nicer. And when you give someone presence, it’s a piece of your life that you won’t get back! That’s pretty darn nice I’d say! I love it!
So, I think gratitude is the best attitude. It’s not happy people who are thankful. It’s thankful people who are happy!
A very dear friend of mine encouraged me to read “The Magic” by Rhonda Byrne, and keep a gratitude journal for a month. What a beautiful practice. I encourage you to do the same! When we look for the good…that is what we see. I hope “The Magic” finds you friends!
