The Friction of Being Visible

to be or not to be...the friction of being visible

Since this is a new project for me, and one that I am not familiar with, nor very comfortable with (yet) quite honestly….I thought this reading from one of my very favorite daily meditation books called “The Book Of Awakening” by Mark Nepo was very fitting. (pg 19)

The Friction of Being Visible

It is only by risking ourselves
from one hour to another
that we live at all.
– William James

I talk a lot about being authentic, truthful, honest – especially to oneself. I believe this to be a fundamental way to live. Honesty is the best policy in my opinion, and unfortunately it does hurt sometimes… But what if we are actually hurting ourselves by being dishonest?… Yes, it’s true. Think about that for a second… Pushing down our feelings and changing ourselves to fit in or avoid conflict may work temporarily to avoid an uncomfortable situation, but it will always come back later to bite you in the butt!

“If we choose to avoid all conflict with others, we will eventaully breed a poisonous conflict within ourselves. Likewise, if we manage to attend our inner lives, who we are will — sooner or later — create some discord with those who would rather have us be something else.
In effect, the cost of being who you are is that you can’t possibly meet everyone’s expectations, and so, there will, inevitably, be external conflict to deal with — the friction of being visible. Still, the cost of not being who you are is that while you are busy pleasing everyone around you, a precious part of you is dying inside; in this case, there will be internal conflict to deal with — the friction of being invisible.” — Mark Nepo

Beautiful words written by Mark Nepo with such a profound message. I am obviously working on this in a big way right now with this blog as my platform! I have to admit it is scary for me, because I know I cannot please everyone – but such is life…. I will shine my light and share my truth to the best of my ability so that I may get beyond the friction of being visible.

Spread your wings and shine your light my friends!
