Detox – what it means, and why you should…

Happy New Year!

Have you ever done a detox before?

What were you detoxing from? Sugar? Alcohol? Rich foods? Stress? Toxic friends?… What does detox really mean?
Detoxification basically means cleaning the blood. This process happens in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination by removing them from the blood.

The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph & skin. However, when this detox system is compromised, impurities are not properly filtered, and every cell in the body is adversely affected, making you feel sluggish, tired, dull or sick.

“Toxins” are literally everywhere.  They come from the air we breathe, the food we eat, and chemicals from the products we use on our bodies and in our homes.

Our bodies are full of toxins from every angle. There is no way to avoid this, unfortunately.  The best we can do is make good choices in the food we eat and the products we use to help with our toxic load.

Detoxing is important for the body’s optimal functioning, and necessary to good health. It is important to support the organs of elimination so that toxins present in the body can be metabolized and excreted.

Toxic build up can cause disease and destroy your life. Detoxification can literally reverse disease and transform your life!!

There are so many ways to go about doing a detox, or cleanse. But first let’s get clear on what to AVOID…these few items are specific!  Four things to avoid during a detox — alcohol, caffeine, sugar & OVEREATING.

If you want to start with a basic detox, start by adding some good cleansing foods to your diet like: water, lemon water, kale, dark leafy greens, fresh fruit, cabbage, artichokes, beets, turmeric, ginger, garlic, green tea, whole grains, asparagus, avocados, broccoli, dandelion, seaweed, and wheatgrass.

For an easier start, try adding the “good things” to your diet first so you don’t feel deprived, and the bad things will naturally drop off. Try it! With all the good foods on your plate there will be no room left for the bad ones! 😉

There are so many ways to detox but doing a juice cleanse is an easy and safe place to start! A juice cleanse helps to flood the body with live enzymes and an abundance of antioxidants.

It also helps to support free radicals and improve immune function. And, taking a break from chewing and digesting food for a few days is a great way to give the entire system a break!  You will be amazed at the health benefits realized from just 1 day!

You could do a 3 day juice cleanse if you are feeling really crummy when you start – it will give your body a few days to relax and give you the optimum benefits you desire.

If you are really wanting to go for it, I challenge you to do 7-10 days of adding some or all of the cleansing foods I mentioned to your diet, then try 1-3 days of a juice cleanse!

I know you will feel fantastic afterward, and will be amazed at the wonderful health benefits – more energy, better sleep, clearer skin, better digestion, the list goes on!

Always remember, there is no magic bullet, food, or pill. The key to being healthy is to be consistent in making good choices, and have good daily habits.

Tune into the physical nature of your experience.  Your body tells you what it needs…you just have to listen!!!
